Roomba aanpassingen .
De Roomba is een microprocessor gestuurde robot stofzuiger. Helaas is alleen de inhoud van de processor, het programma dus, niet toegangelijk. Dit zou de mogelijkheid bieden om de software aan te passen en zo ook de mogelijkheden die dit apparaat bied.
Het is technisch echt een leuk apparaat, waarin zich een heel aantal sensors, schakelaar en motoren bevinden. Dit alles wordt uitgelezen en bestuurd door de microprocessor. Ook kunnen we duidelijk vaststellen dan het niet zomaar een "Gadget" is, maar de Roomba maakt ook echt schoon. Het apparaat is tussen de 60 en 90 minuten actief op een acculading. Tijdens het schoonmaken ontwijkt deze obstakels, voorkomt dat hij klem komt te zitten en door het ingebouwde algoritme komt ie overal.
Op de site http://www.roombacommunity.com/ staan diverse modificaties en fouten beschreven en opgelost. Ook is er getracht de huidige microprocessor te vervangen door een bekend exemplaar en hiervoor zelf software te schrijven, echter lijkt deze poging helaas te zijn gestopt. Wel is er vanuit IRobot, de makers van de Rooba, laatst bekend gemaakt dat er code of een interface beschikbaar gesteld gaat worden om extra functies toe te kunnen gaan voegen.

Er zit ook nog een stukje software in om de sensors van de Roomba te testen. Om in deze mode te komen moeten de drie "S", "M" en "L" button ingedrukt worden en dan de Roomba aanzetten. Houd de toetsen enige seconden ingedrukt. Nu kom je in de testmode terecht. Dit is hoorbaar door het speciale riedeltje wat de Roomba geeft. Vanaf nu kun je door de testen heen stappen door telkens op de "S" of de "L" te drukken. Zie onderstaande testen:
1st L press (red battery light and 1 beep) lets you test the front
bumper sensors. If you press the bumper, the S or L button
illuminates to let you know the bumper sensors work.
2nd L press gives 2 beeps, and the S and M buttons seem to check the
cliff senors on the bumper near the fixed brush on the left, and
apparently the front one on the bumper. You can wave your hand
underneath and the lights go out indicating it senses "floor".
Notice the light? It's red until roomba knows its sensors work,
once it sees they have, the light turns green.
3rd L press (same deal with light above, and 3 beeps) seems to test
the front cliff sensor on the bumper again and the cliff sensor on
the right bumper near the spinning side brush.
4th L press (light is and stays red and 4 beeps) apparently tests
whether Roomba can tell if all 3 wheels are contacing a surface at
the same time. Lift just 1 wheel from the floor and the M light
goes out. Also, this mode reacts to the virtual wall sensors.
Place an active VW near the unit and the S light comes on. (Usefull
for testing boundries, as well as checking VW maybe?)
5th L press (light green, but as above may depend on functionality
of the unit and beeps 5 times) tests the forward motion. It runs
the wheel motors forward (even when you are holding Roomba in mid-
air.) No sensors seems to matter here. He won't bump off of things
or stop for a cliff for this test, so be carefull or he may try and
leave the house on his/her own. The room size lights may give a
status of some sort, but I can't determine what in the 5 minutes I
tested.
6th L press (light again green, 6 beeps) tests backward motion.
(Once again, even with Roomba off the ground the test works, and the
sensors are ignored, and S and L buttons seem to alternate flash,
maybe nore status.)
7th L press (green light, 7 beeps) turn on the main sweeper brush.
It also runs even held in the air. (this throws up a lot of
dust/hair/etc so clean well first, try outside, or on the floor.)
Interesting way to cleas the main brush.
8th L press (green light, 8 beeps) turns on the side rotating brush.
